How a confused employer finally figured out employee discipline and termination.

For example, you might say, "Personnel who fail to wash their hands after using the rest room will receive one day suspension after the first offense, three days after the second offense, and lay off after the third offense." Or, it could be more general, such as "Workers who fail to wash their hands after using the rest room will face suspension and possible lay off." How much leeway you wish to give yourself when it comes to disciplinary action is up to you. For the worker that is genuinely incapable, he or she can easily become an disgruntled worker - even if it is unintentional. Indispensable worker syndrome is a proprietor's (or any boss's) fear that a worker can't be replaced because he uniquely contributes a large share to the business's results. In today's firm environment, these items are crucial.

Keep in mind that if there is a legal action, a court can use your as evidence against you and the company. If the written warning does not work, you must layoff the individual. (When you are not the fired worker's boss, be sure you bring the boss as a witness.) For example, don't layoff a bunch of older workers and, then refill the positions with younger workers 6 months later.
